7 Web Design Myths That Do Not Hold Water

Myths and misconceptions are a regular part of our lives. There is at least one myth for every possible thing and website design is no exception. In web design, you will likely find hundreds of myths, and, funnily enough, these myths affect how a lot of website designers carry out their job.

In this post, we will take a look at some of these web design myths and point out how wrong or inapplicable they are.

1.   Design is the only important aspect of any website –

There is no doubt that the appearance of your website will go a long way in attracting and keeping in visitors. However, this doesn’t make it  more important than the other aspects of your website. The purpose of any website is to attract visitors who will eventually make a purchase decision in your favor, or convert them into a subscriber. If your website is beautiful, but visitors can’t find the content they need, then the purpose of having a website is defeated. While appearance is important, usability and functionality are also important. When people click on a URL for instance, they want to also see information that explains exactly what the URL depicts - cheap domain and web hosting services.

2.   The homepage is the most important page on a website –

A lot of people spend most of their time on the homepage of their website with the assumption that because this is the first page visitors typically land on, it is the most important one on the site. Maybe this was true back in the early days of the internet, when the homepage served as a type of directory for other parts of the website, but in today’s digital age, the homepage is no more important than any other page on the website. Firstly, most visitors don’t actually arrive on the homepage first. Most organic search engine results take the visitor to the page that contains the exact information they are looking for, and chances are they won’t click on the homepage until they leave the website. This also happens when visitors land on a page via links shared on social media. It is better to give every page on your website equal attention, rather than focus your effort on any particular one.

3.   Everything must be 3 clicks away –

One of the long-standing rules of website design is that all content should  be no more than three clicks away on a website. However, despite this rule being generally accepted among modern web designers, there is no data to back up this assumption. Visitors are not really interested in the number of clicks it takes to arrive at their destination, rather they are interested in getting the information they want in the best time possible with minimal hassle. If visitors feel they are not likely to find what they are looking for on a website, they won’t hesitate to leave and go look elsewhere, but one study found  that they do not mind going through as many as 25 clicks if they are certain of eventually getting the information they need on any particular website.

4.   You website must adhere to your taste –

Many web designers and even business owners feel they know best when it comes to how their website should look. You might want a simple layout from a minimalist approach, while another might desire the most complex of designs. The truth is that even if you are the owner of the business, you are not designing a website for yourself but rather for your target audience. Your website should be tailored to suit the taste of your current visitors and the type of people you expect to visit. As a matter of fact, you don’t have to like your own website. As long as it follows  current best practices and your visitors are happy with it, then you should be too.

1.   User feedback should control your decisions –

Make no mistake; as a website designer, user feedback is  vital to the success of any project and can be very helpful in creating a design that meets the expectations of your clients. However, there are some occasions when you need to follow your gut instinct and allow certain recommendations to stay on the back burner. For instance, you may have a client who wants a flash animation website - while this would have been wonderful years ago, it would not go down well with today’s internet users. The current set of internet users are more interested in simple websites with easy to use navigation and easy to locate content.

1.   Mobile users are always on the go and are not concerned with the appearance of your site –

There is no doubt that internet users today are always on the go. There is also no doubt that more  internet content is consumed via mobile devices. However, the school of thought that suggests that mobile users are too distracted to pay any real attention to the look and design of your website is wrong. When designing for the mobile crowd, you need to look at your design from a mobile perspective. That means optimizing your website for mobiles without disregarding  element or function. As a matter of fact, reducing the functionality of your website in order to cater for the mobile crowd may cause you to lose credibility with the bulk of your users.

2.   Website updates are not very important –

A lot of designers and business owners are of the opinion that once a website has been designed and launched, it is self sufficient and does not need any form of updating or editing. This is a total misconception. Don’t forget that new trends are coming out every day and if you don’t keep up with these trends, you stand the risk of losing whatever competitive advantage you have. The approach to web design should be continuous, which means that you should endeavor to update your website regularly to keep up with  new developments in the industry.


There are quite a few more misconceptions about web design floating around out there, but one thing is certain; no two designs are alike. Also, remember that a design that works for someone else may not work for you. Your job is to ensure that you have a design that makes it easy for your users to get what they want as fast as possible.
